Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?
Hi,
a greek pal of mine has a problem with a TO8.
The TO8 shows this pattern:
Voltages are OK, he measured the PSU and the values are fine. The machine tries to initialize, changes some garbled pattern for 1-2 seconds on the screen but finally it stays there and it also resets normally.
Help would be great ... thanks in advance.
Regards

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?
It may be anything, including RAM, ROM, address decoding IC's, gate array...
As described, the 6809 microprocessor probably works.

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?
Ok, thanks. I thought, the patterns could show a more specific problem.
What would be a good test to start detecting what causes the error?

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?
There are two different ways, depending on your skills and your test equipment :
1) Using a logic analyzer to watch the signals on the address bus and on the data bus, and finding when and where the error occurs after the reset.
2) Replacing the IC's one by one. Start with the TTL logic circuits related to the address decoding : 74LS173, 74LS32, 74LS02, the 74LS245 buffer, then the RAM chips, the gate array (this one is very difficult to change because it is glued to the motherboard and a replacement is not easy to found). At last you can also replace the three EPROMS.

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?
after pressing the leters b or c the patern change on mine.. to blue or blue gray with garbage marbles
also when i type load(*blind typing) an press enter the patert freeze or make a new white patern like not found on emulation
i can hear any sound like bbe mpap or something
i change 74LS245 no difference
rams change no difference
74LS02 change no differnce
74LS173ichange and is black now
with a spare i have maybe its not good
with the old one no change
gate array?
i will dessolder with hot air (maybe it will damaged?)

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?
The gate array is a good candidate for this kind of failure. As it is hard glued, hot air is not enough. I do not know how to remove it without damage for itself or for the motherboard.

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?
I would be extremely cautious about unsoldering the gate-array. I have never seen a gate-array failing in 30 years and this chip is custom, this only way presently to fix it would be to rip on from another TO8 - not sure where the gain is.
Have you checked for bad welds on the sockets and ROMs ? There are a usually a lot of problems with old welds, especially if the machine was kept in an environment with lots of temperature difference, like a basement or an attic.
Since you have hot air, try to rework every weld of the various integrated circuits.

I have never seen a gate-array failing in 30 years

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?

Re: Thomson TO8 Error Pattern - some Hints?
